De-Escalation and Personal Safety Seminar

This half‑day seminar will begin with a buffet lunch at noon and program starting at 1pm. This training offers practical guidance on de‑escalation and personal safety, grounded in real‑world crisis‑intervention experience. Participants learn how stress and perception influence behavior, why situational awareness matters, and how verbal and non‑verbal strategies can reduce risk. The session equips attendees with clear, actionable tools for prevention and confident response in both workplace and everyday situations.

De-Escalation Session

DE-ESCALTION SESSION  (90 minutes)
Verbal De-Escalation is used during potentially dangerous or threatening situations. The goal is to prevent a person from causing harm to us, themselves, or others.
In this 90-minute section of the seminar you will go over the following:
  • Situational Awareness
  • Understanding the brain (Primitive/Evolved) and how it affects a person in crisis.
  • What is De-Escalation?
  • Techniques for dealing with a person in crisis.
  • The importance of YOUR mental state when dealing with a person in crisis.
  • De-Escalation is Verbal AND Non-Verbal.
  • Setting limits and boundaries.
  • What is your action plan? 

Personal Safety Session

PERSONAL SAFETY SESSION  (75 Minutes)
The key to personal safety is learning how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations.
This 75-minute section of the seminar includes:
  • IMPORTANCE OF SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
  • What makes me a target victim?
  • Know your ambush points
  • Types of crimes
  • Types of predators
  • True life crime stories (Why the crime occurred and what could have prevented it).
  • Justified force - Targets to aim for

Janina Rager, with the Eugene Police Department, is a seasoned Community Engagement Specialist with 23 years in law enforcement, specializing in crime prevention and crisis intervention.  A Certified Crisis Intervention Specialist, Janina Rager brings deep expertise in de-escalation, community trust-building, and public safety strategies.  Her work focuses on bridging the gap between law enforcement and communities through proactive engagement
