Program Description:Oregon OSHA Heat Illness Prevention Rule
This session will delve into the requirements found in Oregon OSHA’s rules to address heat illness prevention (OAR 437-002-0156 and OAR 437-004-1151). We will discuss several topics including some heat-related illnesses with their common signs, symptoms, and recommended first aid responses. Multiple types of risk factors are covered, as well as how the heat index is measured. This course also goes into detail about what control measures the rules require employers to provide at certain heat index temperatures, such as access to shade, drinking water, and more. |

Presenter Information:
Tim Capley
Tim is a 25 year health compliance Officer in Southern Oregon. He’s a former Health and Safety Officer for a large military remediation contractor in the Pacific. He’s an experienced project Supervisor for Hazardous Materials contractors throughout Oregon. A hazardous waste technician, asbestos and lead abatement Supervisor, and an experienced outdoor worker on jobs involving work in heavy personal protective equipment in outdoor ambient heat conditions. As a Health Compliance Officer in all industries, he’s an individual with a primary responsibility during ambient heat times of the year to enforce the OR OSHA Heat Illness Prevention rule when inspecting workplaces in Southern Oregon during summer months. He’s gained significant experience on the effects of heat on the workers in our area having dealt with situations in our workplaces in the forest, mills, construction sites, and on our farms where workers have had significant illness and loss of life related to heat illness, he’s honored at the opportunity to discuss the topic with our RSA Association.
Paul Utterback, EdM, MS, CIH, Senior IH Consultant Oregon OSHA
Paul has 20+ years as an Oregon OSHA Occupational Health and Ergonomics Consultant stationed in Medford. He worked an additional 6 years in Occupational Health in the Puget Sound and at OIT in Klamath Falls. His current work focuses on presenting basic rule compliance, on-site reviews, and the implementation of innovative solutions that help clients achieve best practice.
